M.D. Formulations Glycolic Acid products were first in a line of the
so-called "Fruit Acids" or "AHAs - Alpha Hydroxy Acids". It has the
smallest molecular size and is the most able to penetrate the skin.
Expressed simply, this natural product sloughs away dull, rough skin to reveal a
softer, smoother, clearer and brighter appearance. Scientific studies
confirm Glycolic Acid plumps up the overall skin texture and stimulates cellular
activity attacking the ageing process and with continued use can actually
reverse damage caused by the sun.
The salon peel contains 30% glycolic acid and is a light peel which means
that you can continue with your normal daily life afterwards.
(There are stronger glycolic peels available -up to 90% glycolic acid - but they
must always be carried out by a member of the medical profession and involve
trauma to the skin that must be carefully managed to aid healing and prevent
infection. Often a client is required to stay indoors for 8 days after a heavy
peel.)
To gain the best results, a client must use homecare products, some of which
contain glycolic acid for at least 2 weeks before a peel. These help to prepare
the skin by loosening the intracellular bonds between the dead skin cells and
acclimatize the skin to glycolic acid. The percentage of glycolic acid in these
skin care products can be 10 - 15% strength and there are products within a
range to suit all skin types and problems.
When using the products and when having the peel, it is normal to experience
some tingling. This is the action of the glycolic acid.
Other temporary reactions which clients MAY experience after a peel are:-
Redness
Dryness
Oiliness
Breakouts
Mild peeling
Not everyone experiences these reactions, in fact many people do not notice any
of these.
As most skin problems are associated with over exposure to UV rays, great
emphasis is placed upon protecting the skin from these harmful and ageing
effects.
Whilst using products with glycolic acid it is VERY IMPORTANT to use a sun
protection cream of factor 30 on a daily basis and reapply during the day if a
client is going to be outside for more than 15 minutes.
This must be adhered to all year round, even on overcast or rainy days. The UV
rays are still penetrating the atmosphere!
There would be little point in spending time, money and effort improving the
appearance and texture of your skin if you are going to subject these lovely
fresh new skin cells to the harmful effects of the environment without any
protection.
Glycolic compound acts as a ‘superior moisturiser’ for the skin. It increases the glycosaminoglycans (GAGS) in the epidermis and dermis - these are cells that are natural water-holding sponges in the skin. They can shrivel with age and abuse but glycolic acid attracts water to these cells by as much as 100% in 8 weeks. A hydrated skin is a healthy skin, better able to withstand the elements and stresses of modern life and the environment.
Glycolic peels ‘unglue’ and dislodge dead skin cells from the outer surface of the skin aiding exfoliation and leaving the skin fresher looking and with a smoother refined texture, lessening fine lines.
The action of glycolic on the skin restimulates fibroblasts in the dermis and increases collagen by 30% thus restructuring the epidermis and dermis to a degree.
Glycolic compound penetrates the sebaceous follicle where the build-up of dead cells is also primarily responsible for the acne process. When the substances blocking the follicle are eliminated, by the deep cleansing action of Glycolic, problem skin can be effectively controlled.
In summary, glycolic compound is used to reduce signs of sun damage, acne, pigmentation problems, rosacea and ingrown hairs.
